Does Sermorelin Increase Testosterone?

Read on

Sermorelin keeps popping up in conversations about testosterone optimization. You've probably seen it mentioned alongside TRT, peptides, and other hormone therapies. So now you're asking: does sermorelin increase testosterone, or not?

The short answer is no, not directly. But there's more to the story than a simple yes or no. Understanding what sermorelin actually does, and where it might fit into hormone optimization, requires looking at the mechanism and the research.

Let's clear up the confusion.

Does Sermorelin Increase Testosterone?

Sermorelin does not increase testosterone the way testosterone replacement therapy or enclomiphene does. It's not designed to stimulate testosterone production, and clinical studies have not shown consistent, significant increases in testosterone levels from sermorelin alone.

What sermorelin does is stimulate your pituitary gland to release more growth hormone (GH). Growth hormone and testosterone are separate hormones with different functions, though they can influence each other indirectly.

Some men report improvements in energy, body composition, and libido while using sermorelin. These benefits might feel similar to what you'd expect from higher testosterone, but they're primarily driven by increased growth hormone, not testosterone increasing itself.

What Sermorelin Actually Does

Sermorelin is a growth hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH) analog. It mimics the natural hormone your hypothalamus releases to tell your pituitary gland to produce and release growth hormone.

As you age, growth hormone production declines. This contributes to reduced muscle mass, increased fat storage, slower recovery, and diminished sleep quality. Sermorelin addresses this by restoring the signal to produce more GH.

The effects of increased growth hormone include:

  • Improved muscle growth and retention
  • Enhanced fat metabolism
  • Better recovery from exercise
  • Improved sleep quality and depth
  • Potential improvements in skin elasticity and overall vitality

These are legitimate benefits, and many people take sermorelin orally or by injection with great outcomes. But they're not the same as increasing testosterone in someone with clinically low testosterone.

How Sermorelin May Support Testosterone & Where the Evidence Stops

The honest truth is that there is no consistent human evidence showing sermorelin meaningfully increases testosterone.

Sermorelin works by stimulating growth hormone (GH) release, not by directly activating testosterone production. Any effect on testosterone would have to be indirect, likely through downstream hormones like luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). While some studies of growth hormone–releasing peptides have shown occasional increases in LH and FSH, these responses are inconsistent and secondary to GH release.

Animal data suggests a possible link. In growth hormone–deficient rats, sermorelin therapy increased testosterone secretion, indicating that improving GH signaling can influence testosterone production under certain conditions. However, animal findings do not reliably translate to aging humans.

Human data tells a more restrained story. In a study of elderly men aged 60 to 78, sermorelin significantly increased GH and IGF-1 levels in a dose-dependent manner, with some effects persisting even after treatment stopped. Testosterone levels showed a positive correlation with higher GH levels, but the increases were not statistically significant.

In practical terms, sermorelin may improve the overall hormonal environment, but it is not a reliable or predictable way to raise testosterone. For men whose primary goal is increasing testosterone, therapies that directly target testosterone production or signaling are far more effective.

If Your Goal Is Higher Testosterone There Are Better Options

If you're researching sermorelin because you want to raise your testosterone levels, there are more direct and effective options (that aren’t TRT).

Enclomiphene is a medication used off-label to stimulate natural testosterone production. It works by blocking estrogen receptors in your brain, which triggers your pituitary to consistently release more LH and FSH. These hormones signal your testes to produce more testosterone.

Clinical studies show enclomiphene raising testosterone levels by 50-100% or more, bringing men from deficient ranges (below 300 ng/dL) into healthy, normal ranges (400-600+ ng/dL). The effect is consistent, measurable, and targeted.

Unlike testosterone replacement therapy, enclomiphene preserves fertility and keeps your natural hormone production system running. It's an oral medication, taken once daily, with minimal side effects for most men.

If your labs show low testosterone and you're experiencing symptoms like low energy, reduced libido, or difficulty building muscle, enclomiphene may address the root problem directly, while sermorelin won't solve that issue.

When Sermorelin Makes Sense (And When It Doesn't)

Sermorelin makes sense when your primary goals are:

  • Improving body composition (muscle gain, fat loss)
  • Enhancing recovery from training
  • Improving sleep quality and depth
  • Addressing age-related decline in growth hormone
  • Supporting overall vitality and well-being

It doesn't make sense when:

  • Your main complaint is low testosterone symptoms
  • Your labs show clinically low testosterone levels
  • You're looking for a direct testosterone boost
  • You expect dramatic changes in libido or sexual function

Sermorelin is a tool for optimizing growth hormone, not testosterone. Use it for what it's designed to do.

The Power Move: Combining Sermorelin with Testosterone Optimization

While sermorelin alone won't solve low testosterone, combining sermorelin with testosterone optimization may creates a powerful strategy.

Growth hormone and testosterone work together to maximize muscle growth, fat loss, and recovery. When both are optimized, the results exceed what either hormone can achieve alone.

For men who:

  • Want to maximize body composition improvements
  • Are serious about training and recovery
  • Have both declining GH and testosterone levels
  • Are looking for comprehensive hormone optimization

Combining enclomiphene (for natural testosterone production) with sermorelin (for growth hormone stimulation) addresses both pathways simultaneously. You may get the energy, libido, and strength benefits of higher testosterone alongside the recovery, fat loss, and sleep improvements from optimized growth hormone.

This isn't for everyone and this should be evaluated by your physician, but for men committed to optimizing their hormones comprehensively, it's worth discussing with your healthcare provider.

The Bottom Line: Does Sermorelin Increase Testosterone?

No, sermorelin does not reliably or significantly increase testosterone levels. It's designed to stimulate growth hormone production, not testosterone production.

While there's theoretical potential for modest, indirect testosterone increases through LH and FSH stimulation, this effect is inconsistent and not clinically significant enough to rely on if your goal is raising testosterone.

If you have low testosterone, use a treatment that may address that problem: off-label enclomiphene or testosterone replacement therapy. If you have declining growth hormone and want to improve body composition, recovery, and sleep, sermorelin is an excellent option.

And if you're optimizing both hormones? That's when sermorelin and testosterone optimization work together to deliver comprehensive results.

Getting Started with Hormonal Optimization

At Strut Health, we don't push one-size-fits-all solutions. We help you identify what your body actually needs based on your symptoms, labs, and goals.

You can start with an online assessment and our licensed healthcare providers will review your health history and symptoms. And in the case of testosterone treatment, if you don't have recent labs, we can send an at-home testing kit to measure your baseline hormone levels.

If compounded off-label sermorelin is right for you, we offer both injectable and oral troche formulations.

If testosterone optimization is the priority, compounded off-label enclomiphene (Strut Mojo) might be a good option to stimulate your natural production. And if comprehensive hormone optimization makes sense, we can discuss combination therapy.
