Safety Info

Important Safety Information for Finasteride Tablets

Contraindications and warnings:

  • Finasteride is a medication for men only, women and children should never take Finasteride.
  • Finasteride is not indicated for use in women or pediatric patients.
  • Women who are pregnant or potentially may be pregnant should not handle whole or crushed Finasteride tablets due to the risk of birth defects in a male fetus. If a pregnant woman comes in contact with crushed or broken Finasteride tablets, wash the contact area with soap and water right away and a healthcare provider should be contacted.
  • Finasteride normally causes a decrease in PSA levels. If your PSA levels go up while you are taking Finasteride it may signal the presence of prostate cancer and should be evaluated by a physician.
  • 5 Alpha-Reductase Inhibitors may increase the risk of high grade prostate cancer.
  • Do not take Finasteride if you are allergic to any of the ingredients in the tablet.

Before taking this medication:

You should not use Finasteride if you are allergic to it, or:

  • If you are a woman or a child.
  • If you are a woman who is pregnant or may be pregnant. Finasteride may harm an unborn baby.

Tell your healthcare provider about:

  • Any health conditions that you have, including liver or prostate problems.
  • All other medications that you take, including over the counter medications or vitamins and supplements.
  • Keep a list of all medications you take to show your healthcare provider and pharmacist.

Drug Interactions:

  • Propecia/Proscar: Do not take Finasteride if you are also taking Propecia or Proscar, these medications contain the same active ingredient and you would be taking too much.
  • Cytochrome P450-Linked Drug Metabolizing Enzyme System: No drug interactions of clinical importance have been identified. Finasteride does not appear to affect the cytochrome P450-linked drug-metabolizing enzyme system. Compounds that have been tested in man include antipyrine, digoxin, propranolol, theophylline, and warfarin and no clinically meaningful interactions were found.
  • Other Concomitant Therapy: Although specific interaction studies were not performed, finasteride doses of 1 mg or more were concomitantly used in clinical studies with acetaminophen, acetylsalicylic acid, α-blockers, analgesics, angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors, anticonvulsants, benzodiazepines, beta blockers, calcium-channel blockers, cardiac nitrates, diuretics, H2 antagonists, HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors, prostaglandin synthetase inhibitors (also referred to as NSAIDs), and quinolone anti-infectives without evidence of clinically significant adverse interactions.

  • Hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Potential side effects of Finasteride:

  • Decrease in your blood Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) levels. Finasteride may lower your PSA levels. If your PSA levels increase during the time that you are taking Finasteride, this may be a sign of the presence of prostate cancer and should be evaluated, even if this increase is still within normal limits.
  • Potential increased risk of a more serious form of prostate cancer in men taking finasteride at 5 times the dose of Finasteride for hair loss.

Common Finasteride side effects may include:

  • Decrease in sex drive

Your Questions,
Answered

How to store Finasteride tablets?

Store your Finasteride in a closed container at room temperature in a dry environment. Avoid bathroom storage due to a potentially high humidity environment. Store Finasteride safely away from pets and children. Finasteride is a category X medication, meaning that it can cause birth defects. For this reason, women should not handle even the unbroken Finasteride tablets. If a tablet is crushed, its exposure to skin can increase when handled.

If I’m currently using another hair loss product, will a switch cause shedding?

There is not usually a shedding period if you are switching from an oral Finasteride or Dutasteride to topical Finasteride or Dutasteride, or from a topical to an oral form. However, if you have been using a topical Minoxidil (the active ingredient in Rogaine) product and you are switching to a medication that does not contain Minoxidil, you may see shedding. To help avoid this shedding, you can do a slow taper of the Minoxidil product over 6-8 weeks while transitioning to the new product, or you can make sure there is Minoxidil in your new formula.

What are the potential side effects of Finasteride tablets?

The potential side effects when using Finasteride 1mg tablets include depression, anxiety, dizziness, weakness, lightheadedness, headache, difficulty urinating, testicular pain, runny nose, rash, allergic reactions, swelling of hands or feet, swelling, pain, leakage, or tenderness of the breast tissue. A small percentage of men in clinical trials (3.8%) experienced sexual side effects including reducing sexual desire, erectile dysfunction, or lowered semen volume, which may continue after stopping treatment. It is worth noting that in these same trials, 2.1% of men taking the placebo also reported these sexual effects. See the Important Safety Information for a full list of potential side effects.

How long until I may see an effect from Finasteride?

You may need to take Finasteride for 3 months or more before you start seeing the benefits. Although some people may start seeing results sooner.

Frequently asked questions

What is Finasteride?

Finasteride 1mg is the generic form of Propecia that is FDA-approved for male pattern hair loss, or androgenic alopecia. When Finasteride is used in a 5mg dose it is generic for Proscar and is FDA-approved to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), which is also known as an enlarged prostate.

How do I take Finasteride?

Take your dose of Finasteride at the same time each day. You may take Finasteride with or without food. If you miss a dose and are only off by a few hours, you may go ahead and take your missed dose. However, if you missed a dose and it has been more than a few hours skip your dose and continue on like usual the next day. Finasteride will not work better if you take more than 1 daily, so take Finasteride exactly as prescribed and never take an extra dose. You may need to take Finasteride for 3 months or more before you start seeing the hair benefits.

How does Finasteride work?

Finasteride is a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor medication. Finasteride works on the scalp by blocking the enzyme which converts Testosterone to Dihydrotestosterone (DHT). It has been discovered that DHT can play a role in male pattern hair loss. Once DHT is reduced by Finasteride, you may experience a reduction in hair loss and general maintenance of the hair you currently have. Sometimes, Finasteride will even regrow some of the lost hair, but the main goal is reducing additional hair loss.

Fast and friendly service and shipping. Product seems great for my hair though too early to see results yet as I am only a month in.
Gabriel
I have been using Strut to grow my hair back for about 7 months now and it works great! I noticed it starting to thicken in certain areas after the first month. The instructions are easy! Simply take prescription they provide every morning and be on my way.
Kallesh
I finally decided to do something about my seriously thinning hair so thought I'd give Strut a try. I also liked that Strut had finasteride gel as one of their options since I did not want to take it orally. I completed my online questionnaire, uploaded photos of my hair, and awaited my physician's answer. Once approved and payment made, I received my meds in really fast time and I'm now on my way to having, hopefully, a fuller head of hair. The med products are packaged very professionally and attractively. Thanks Strut!
