How long does Viagra (Sildenafil) last?

Viagra and its generic form Sildenafil has a half-life of 4 hours.

This means that after 4 hours, half of the medication has been metabolized out of your body, and according to Pfizer this is about the amount of time you should expect Viagra to last after taking your dose.

Small amounts of medication will still remain after these 4 hours and it will take a few more hours for your body to fully metabolize the medication, but the Viagra will likely not still be working for you after the first 4 hours.

The peak of the medication tends to be around 1-2 hours after taking the dose, so you will likely feel the effects more in the first 1-2 hours and feel the effects less in the remaining 3-4 hours.

Even if the medication seems to no longer be working in your body, do not take more than 1 dose of Viagra or Sildenafil daily.

When does Viagra start working?

Most people will start having the effects of Viagra between 30-60 minutes after taking their dose.

For some people, the onset may take as long as 120 minutes to start working.

The time it takes for the medication to start working varies due to age, other conditions, other medications, your metabolism, or what you ate that day.

Taking Viagra or Sildenafil along with a high-fat meal tends to delay the medication absorption and can make it take longer for Viagra to start working for you.

When is Viagra lasting too long?

The effects of Viagra or Sildenafil should start wearing off after about 3-4 hours at the latest.

If you find that you have a painful erection lasting 4 hours or longer, or off and on for several hours, you are experiencing a dangerous condition called priapism.

Priapism can cause permanent damage to the penile tissues and you will need to seek medical attention immediately.

Take your medication with you and go to the emergency room if you are experiencing priapism.

After the priapism event, you will need to discuss with your doctor if your Viagra therapy or dosage needs to be reevaluated.

When can you take Viagra again?

Even if you feel that the effects of your Viagra or Sildenafil dose have worn off, or you do not think that your dose was strong enough, do not take another dose until the next day.

You will still have small amounts of medication in your body even if you are not still feeling the Viagra, and taking another dose can increase your risk of dangerous side effects.

Do not take Viagra or Sildenafil more than once a day.

Sometimes your doctor will advise you to not take any more often than a few times a week, in this case, listen to your doctor’s instructions for taking Viagra or Sildenafil.
