Cialis (Tadalafil) for BPH: How it Works

How does Cialis help with BPH? Cialis was first developed as a medication for ED, but was also found to have benefits in men that have BPH. Learn more here.

BPH is a long-term condition that develops often in older men. Along with the annoying symptoms of causing urinary urgency and frequency among men, BPH can also increase the risk of men having difficulty achieving erections.

Luckily, there may be a drug on the market that helps with both the urinary symptoms of BPH, while also improving any ED problems men with BPH may be experiencing.

Read on to learn more about BPH, Cialis, and just how this medication for ED can help with the condition.

What is BPH?

BPH stands for Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia, and this condition happens when the prostate gland grows in size. This gland happens to wrap around the urethra, or the tube in men which carries urine out of the bladder. So, if the gland enlarges too much, some of the first signs are feeling like you have to use the restroom more often, or feeling a sense of urgency when needing to use the restroom.

Other symptoms of BPH include:

  • Need to urinate frequently or urgently
  • Increased night urination
  • Trouble starting urination
  • A stopping and starting urine stream, or a very weak stream
  • Dribbling after urinating
  • A feeling of not completely emptying your bladder

How does Cialis help with BPH?

Cialis was first developed as a medication for erectile dysfunction, but was also found to have benefits in men that have BPH. But, just how does a drug for a seemingly totally different condition help with both?

Cialis help with ED by relaxing the tissues in the penis and helping to bring more blood flow to the area to achieve an erection. Similarly, Cialis has been found to help relax the muscle cells in the bladder and prostate, thus releasing the pressure on the urethra running through the center and helping to improve urinary symptoms.

Cialis as a treatment for BPH as well as ED comes as a welcome therapy for men with BPH, considering some other medications (like alpha-blockers) used to treat BPH not only do not help with ED symptoms, they are actually known to make ED worse in some.

How to take Cialis for BPH?

The dose for Cialis for ED is different than the dose you would take for BPH. For erectile dysfunction only, men are normally advised to take their dose as needed about 1 hour before sexual activity. And, for ED, the strength used is normally 10mg - 20mg.

However, if you are taking Cialis for BPH (and ED), you take your dose every day, and the dose is normally the 5mg tablet. As with any medication, you need to follow your doctor’s instructions on dosing and how often to take your medication.
