9 Signs You're Losing Collagen in Your Face

Yes, that's collagen loss. No, you're not overreacting.

Read on

You've heard a lot about collagen over the last few years. So much, in fact, that at some point you were stirring white powder into your morning coffee just to stay ahead of it. But now, you're standing in front of the mirror, changing the lighting, taking selfies at weird angles—wondering if you've officially entered the "oh god, is my face aging?" group chat.

Spoiler: it might really be the collagen. Or rather, the lack of it.

Collagen is the structural protein that keeps skin firm, bouncy, and defined. It makes up roughly 75–80% of your skin—and it starts declining in your mid-20s. By your 40s, the effects are usually visible. The tricky part is knowing what you're actually looking at, and what to do about it.

Here's how to read what your skin is telling you. Keep reading for 9 signs you're losing collagen in your face.

9 of The Most Common Signs of Collagen Loss in the Face

Think of collagen as the scaffolding underneath your skin. It's what holds everything up—the firmness, the contours, the bounce-back when you smile. When it's abundant, skin looks plump and defined. When it starts to go, things shift. Literally.

And go it does. Collagen declines at roughly 1% per year starting in your mid-20s, so by your 40s, the structural changes are usually visible.

Some women will notice signs earlier or more intensely than others. If you've had years of unprotected sun exposure, significant UV damage, a smoking habit, or naturally have fair skin, your collagen loss may be accelerated. So if you fall into these categories, and you're 40+ you might find you have a few signs of collagen loss.

Here's what to look for.

1. Fine Lines That Don't Disappear When You Relax Your Face

This is usually the first one. You smile, you squint, you raise an eyebrow, but the dynamic line stays visible.

Dynamic wrinkles (the kind caused by facial movement) are normal at any age.

But when collagen is abundant, skin snaps back. When it's depleted, the dermis no longer has the structural resilience to bounce. Fine lines appear first around high-movement areas like the eyes and mouth, and eventually deepen into more permanent creases as the underlying scaffolding continues to thin.

If it's the eye area that's bothering you: the skin there is already the thinnest on your face, which is why it shows collagen loss earliest. Using a targeted eye formula matters here.

Early sign: Fine lines appear around the eyes and mouth during expression but mostly smooth out at rest.

Advanced sign: Lines are visible at rest, deeper, and don't respond to moisturizer or sleep.

2. Your Cheeks Look Flatter — or Your Face Looks More Angular Than It Used To

Volume loss is one of the more disorienting signs of collagen loss because it changes the geometry of your face. You might find yourself thinking I look tired or I look older without being able to pinpoint exactly why.

Collagen works alongside elastin and fat to create the plump, rounded contours associated with youthful faces. When collagen diminishes, these areas begin to flatten and hollow, particularly the cheeks, temples, and under the eyes, creating a gaunt or tired appearance.

Early sign: Cheeks look slightly less full in photos, especially under harsh lighting.

Advanced sign: Visible hollowing under the cheekbones or temples; a gauntness that wasn't there before.

This is the kind of change that injectables like hyaluronic acid fillers or biostimulatory fillers address most directly. Worth a conversation with a board-certified dermatologist if it's a significant concern.

3. Your Jawline Is Softer, or You're Developing Jowls

The jawline is where gravity and collagen loss conspire most visibly. Without sufficient collagen support, gravity takes a greater toll on facial tissues, and the skin along the jawline begins to succumb to gravitational pull, loosening and, eventually, creating that downward drift of jowls.

Early sign: A slight softening of the jawline definition, especially visible in photos or side profile.

Advanced sign: Visible skin descending below the jawline; jowls that are noticeable at rest and in motion.

Topical retinoids can slow further loss, rebuild some structure and improve skin firmness over time, but for significant jowling, radiofrequency treatments, ultrasound therapy (Ultherapy), or filler placed strategically along the jawline tend to produce the most visible correction.

4. Your Pores Look Larger

This one surprises people. Enlarged pores aren't just a skin congestion issue, they're also a structural one.

Collagen surrounds and supports pores. As it diminishes, pores lose their structural support and appear larger, often one of the earliest signs of collagen loss that people notice, particularly around the nose, cheeks, and forehead.

Early sign: Pores look more visible in the mirror, especially in bright or natural light.

Advanced sign: Pores appear stretched or elongated; skin texture looks uneven even when clean.

No topical will physically shrink pores, but tretinoin cream does help reduce the appearance of pores by increasing cell turnover and restoring the collagen matrix around them. Retinoids and skin-thickening ingredients can meaningfully reduce their appearance over time.

5. Your Skin Looks Dull, Even When You're Well-Rested

Collagen isn't just structural. It's also involved in how light interacts with your skin. Healthy, collagen-rich skin has a density and translucency that reflects light evenly. As collagen thins, skin can start to look flat, sallow, or just off in a way that a brightening concealer can’t quite fix.

You might consider chemical exfoliation treatments that lift old dead skin cells that might not slough off at the same rate they used to. (This slows down as we get older.) Chemical exfoliants like lactic acid, glycolic acid or salicylic acid might help bring back a little glow.

Structurally speaking, using a retinoid consistently can help you on the glowy-front and restore collagen.

Early sign: Skin looks less luminous than it used to; a general flatness that good sleep doesn't fix.

Advanced sign: Persistent dullness, sallowness, or an overall tired appearance regardless of lifestyle.

6. Skin That Feels Thinner or More Fragile

Run your fingers along your cheekbone or your temple. If the skin there feels noticeably more delicate than it used to—more papery, easier to see the underlying structure through—that may be the dermis thinning.

When collagen production declines, the ability to strengthen and maintain healthy skin is weakened. Skin loses its firmness and texture. This thinning also makes skin more vulnerable to bruising, sun damage, and slower healing, so if you're noticing those too, they're not unrelated.

Early sign: Skin feels slightly less cushioned; fine veins or bone structure slightly more visible at the temples.

Advanced sign: Skin feels fragile or paper-thin; bruises easily; takes longer to heal from minor irritation.

7. Dryness That Your Moisturizer Isn't Fixing

There's a difference between surface dehydration (easily addressed with a good hyaluronic acid serum) and the kind of persistent dryness that sits deeper. A lack of collagen can lead to a loss of hydration, causing dry, tight, and uncomfortable skin because collagen plays a role in maintaining the structural integrity of the skin barrier.

If you've changed nothing about your routine but your skin has started to feel drier than it used to, especially if you're in perimenopause or menopause, this is worth paying attention to.

Early sign: Skin feels tighter than usual after cleansing; occasional dry patches.

Advanced sign: Persistent dryness that doesn't resolve with moisturizer; skin feels uncomfortable or reactive.

8. Lines Around Your Mouth That Weren't There Before

The area around the mouth—nasolabial folds, marionette lines, lip lines—is a common early site for visible collagen loss because the skin here is highly mobile and relatively thin. These lines deepen as collagen in the dermis breaks down and fat pads beneath begin to shift.

Early sign: Faint lines appear at the corners of the mouth or above the lip, mostly visible in motion.

Advanced sign: Deep nasolabial folds or marionette lines visible at rest; vertical lip lines that show through makeup.

This is also an area where tretinoin shows strong clinical results. Tretinoin, available by prescription in 0.025%, 0.05%, and 0.1% strengths, works by both promoting new collagen production and blocking the enzymes that break existing collagen down. The area around the mouth is thin so less is more.

9. Your Neck Looks Different From Your Face

If your skincare stops at your jawline, your neck will age on its own timeline, usually faster, because it's thinner-skinned and gets more incidental sun exposure with less protection. Sagging skin along the jaw, cheek, and neck areas is a direct result of collagen-driven loss of elasticity.

The disconnect between a well-maintained face and a neglected neck is one of the most common things dermatologists see in patients over 40.

Early sign: Horizontal neck lines that weren't prominent before; slight looseness along the jaw-neck boundary.

Advanced sign: Visible crepiness or sagging along the neck; significant difference in texture between face and neck.

Extending your actives (like retinoids, vitamin C, SPF) down to the neck and décolletage makes a real difference. For targeted treatment, this tightening neck cream is designed specifically for the anatomy of neck skin. It’s gentle for thinner skin but strong enough to make a real difference.

What You Can Do About Collagen Loss

There's a reason tretinoin is repeatedly mentioned as a great intervention for collagen loss.

Landmark research shows tretinoin produced up to an 80% increase in collagen formation in treated skin. Those who were left untreated had a 14% decrease in collagen. (The first studies that proved photodamaged skin can be structurally repaired.)

If you're worried about signs of collagen loss the easiest and most researched backed way to intervene is with tretinoin.

Starting tretinoin won't reverse years of loss overnight, results take 6+ months, but consistent use can meaningfully turn the clock back on:

  • Fine lines and crow's feet
  • Skin dullness and uneven texture
  • Enlarged pores
  • Dark spots and sun damage
  • Thinning, fragile skin
  • Loss of firmness and bounce

It's an at-home prescription that fits into your existing routine. The clinical evidence behind it is decades deep. And it's more accessible than most people realize—no in-office appointment required.
