Frequently Asked Questions

What is The Strut Eye Cream?

The Strut Eye Cream is a customized compounded prescription cream designed for application to the external skin around the eyes, as directed by a licensed healthcare provider. The formula combines multiple ingredients in one convenient topical treatment, with the formulation selected based on your individual skin concerns and treatment needs.

What is Tretinoin?

Tretinoin is a prescription topical retinoid used in dermatology. The tretinoin in Strut Eye Cream is part of a custom compounded formulation.*

How does The Strut Eye Cream work?

The Strut Eye Cream works by combining the strengths of multiple active ingredients. Commercial Tretinoin works by potentially increasing the rate of skin cell turnover, replacing old skin cells with new skin cells faster than usual. This faster turnover is why Tretinoin is prescribed for acne and for the fine lines, dark spots and rough texture of sun-damaged skin; it may also help the appearance of some scars. Commercial Tacrolimus is a topical anti-inflammatory that may help reduce any inflammation of the eyelids and surrounding tissue. Caffeine, Niacinamide and Vitamin C have been studied for topical use in skin health. The Strut Eye Cream is compounded, thus the individual ingredients and finished combination have not been evaluated by FDA to establish safety or effectiveness for a particular cosmetic or dermatologic outcome.

How long does The Strut Eye Cream take to work?

Everyone's skin responds differently, and the time it takes to notice changes can vary based on your prescribed formulation, frequency of use, skin concerns, and tolerance. Changes associated with topical retinoid treatment generally develop gradually over time rather than immediately. Some skin improvement signs may show up earlier in the treatment phase but this is dependent on how your skin works with the treatment. Use your medication exactly as prescribed and allow your provider to evaluate your response over months to get the best treatment plan. If you have questions about your progress or tolerance, contact your provider.

What are the possible side effects of The Strut Eye Cream?

Some people experience side effects from using creams containing Tretinoin, especially when first starting out on the cream, or when increasing the amount you are using. The most common side effects of Tretinoin cream include: redness, peeling, burning, stinging, dry skin, or skin irritation. This is not a complete listing of the potential side effects of Tretinoin cream, just the most common side effects. Tacrolimus may contribute to skin sensitivity, feelings of warmth, skin tingling, and skin irritation or rash in some users. Let your healthcare provider know if you experience signs of an allergic reaction when using any new product on your skin. Use sunscreen during the day while using this product since increased skin sensitivity to UV light will occur. Take a look at the more detailed safety information on the product page for more information.

What should I tell my healthcare provider before starting The Strut Eye Cream?

Before starting on The Strut Eye Cream, you should tell your healthcare provider a few key things. Let them know if you are pregnant, trying to get pregnant, or breastfeeding. Tretinoin and Tacrolimus in this formula should not be used during pregnancy as it can negatively affect the development of a growing baby. You should let your healthcare provider know about any other medications you are using, health conditions you have including skin conditions, or other skincare treatments you have tried in the past or are currently using. Let your healthcare provider know about other skincare items you are using, even over-the-counter products. Some over-the-counter products can contain non-prescription retinoids or be especially irritating when used alongside Tretinoin and the other active ingredients in this cream.

What should I avoid while using The Strut Eye Cream?

While you are using The Strut Eye Cream you will want to avoid a few things and pick your other skincare items very carefully. Avoid excess sun exposure when using The Strut Eye Cream as it can make your skin more sensitive to the sun and make you more prone to burning (always use daily sunscreen for this reason). Avoid using additional retinoid or strong products around the eye when you are using this prescription-strength cream to avoid the increased risk of side effects, even in over-the-counter products. Avoid overly drying or irritating skin care items like drying soaps and cleansers, alcohol-based products, harsh exfoliants, salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, or chemical peels.

What is the important safety information about this product?

The Strut Eye Cream is a compounded prescription medication for external dermatologic use only. Compounded medications are not FDA-approved, and FDA does not review compounded medications for safety, effectiveness, or quality before marketing. Use this medication only as prescribed and contact your provider if you experience severe or persistent irritation or another concerning reaction. See the Safety Information tab for additional warnings and precautions.

How much does the online visit cost?

The online visits are typically complimentary. With Strut, you will only pay for the prescription if you qualify after your medical consultation. If after checking out, the healthcare provider identifies that you are not a good candidate for treatment, you will not be charged. If you decide to transfer your prescription at any time to a non-preferred pharmacy of Strut Health, then you will be charged a $40 provider consultation fee to your credit card on file. Customer service can provide additional details.

How will this medication be shipped to me?

Your medication will be shipped to you via USPS from a U.S. compounding pharmacy. There is no additional cost for shipping.

How should I apply The Strut Eye Cream?

You will want to apply your Strut Eye Cream at night. Start by washing your face and eye area with a gentle cleanser and water, then pat dry and allow your skin to fully dry. Apply a small pea-sized amount of your Strut Eye Cream in a very thin layer around the eye area, avoiding getting it in the eye or tear ducts. Since it is a small amount, a gentle patting or tapping application may be easier than rubbing it in. Wash your hands and allow the cream to soak in. Once the cream has had some time to soak in, follow with a gentle moisturizer to help with dryness. While you are using The Strut Eye Cream, it is recommended to wear sunscreen daily as your skin may be more sensitive to the sun. You should also be diligent about moisturizing your skin twice daily to help prevent and improve dryness and irritation that may develop with retinoid cream use.

Do I need to wear sunscreen when using The Strut Eye Cream?

You do need to wear sunscreen during the day when you are using The Strut Eye Cream. Although you will be applying the The Strut Eye Cream at night, your skin will still be more sensitive to sunlight during the day during the course of your treatment. This may mean you are more likely to burn than usual. For this reason, it is recommended to use an at-least 30 SPF sunscreen as part of your daily skincare routine. If you become sunburned or develop significant skin irritation, contact your provider for guidance before continuing treatment.

Is The Strut Eye Cream a compounded medication?

Yes. The Strut Eye Cream is a compounded prescription medication in a copper-peptide infused cream base prepared by a state-licensed U.S. compounding pharmacy pursuant to a patient-specific prescription. Your prescription label will identify the ingredients, strengths, storage instructions, and beyond-use date (BUD) for your medication. Compounded medications are not FDA-approved, and FDA does not review compounded medications for safety, effectiveness, or quality before they are marketed. Follow the storage instructions provided by the dispensing pharmacy and do not use the medication after the beyond-use date shown on your prescription label.

Is it normal to have skin irritation when starting The Strut Eye Cream?

Redness, dryness, peeling, burning, stinging, itching, warmth, or other irritation can occur when beginning treatment with topical ingredients such as tretinoin or tacrolimus. Mild irritation may lessen as your skin adjusts, but significant or persistent irritation should not be ignored. Use gentle skincare products and avoid adding other potentially irritating products to the treatment area unless directed by your healthcare provider. Follow appropriate sun-protection measures during treatment. If you develop severe or persistent irritation, significant swelling, blistering, rash, signs of infection, or symptoms involving the eye itself, stop using the medication and contact your provider for guidance.
