Finasteride is a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor medication. Finasteride works on the scalp by blocking the enzyme which converts Testosterone to Dihydrotestosterone (DHT). It has been discovered that DHT can play a role in male pattern hair loss. Finasteride 1 mg is FDA-approved for the treatment of male pattern hair loss in men. With continued use, finasteride can slow hair loss and may increase hair growth in some men. Some men also see some regrowth, but the main goal is to slow further loss.

Store finasteride at room temperature in a tightly closed container and protect it from moisture and humidity (such as in a bathroom). Keep medication safely away from children and pets. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should not handle crushed or broken finasteride tablets because finasteride may be absorbed through the skin and may pose a risk to a male fetus. The tablets are coated to prevent contact with the active ingredient during normal handling when they are intact.

Changes in a hair loss treatment regimen may affect shedding or hair growth. Your response can vary depending on the medications you currently use and the treatment you are starting. In an integrated analysis, one or more of these effects were reported by 3.8% of men taking finasteride compared with 2.1% taking placebo. Postmarketing reports have also included sexual dysfunction that continued after stopping treatment, male infertility or poor semen quality, testicular pain, blood in semen, breast tenderness or enlargement, allergic reactions, depression, and suicidal thoughts or behavior. Because postmarketing reactions are reported voluntarily, their frequency and relationship to finasteride cannot always be determined. Tell your healthcare provider about any side effect that bothers you or does not go away. Seek immediate medical attention for signs of a serious allergic reaction. FDA's current labeling says daily use for three months or more is generally necessary before benefit is observed. Continued use is recommended to maintain benefit.

Take your dose of Finasteride at the same time each day. You may take Finasteride with or without food. If you miss a dose and are only off by a few hours, you may go ahead and take your missed dose. However, if you missed a dose and it has been more than a few hours, skip your dose and continue on like usual the next day. Finasteride will not work better if you take more than your prescribed dose, so take Finasteride exactly as prescribed and never take an extra dose.
