Learn how to use hair loss treatments like topical Minoxidil and Finasteride formulations.

Read on

So, you’re thinking about using a hair loss treatment like Rogaine but you’re feeling a little lost?

This is why we wrote a simple how-to for those who are beginning a hair loss treatment for the first time.

Topical hair loss treatments

Hair loss topical treatments are widely prevalent and come in oral tablet, foam, liquid solution, and gel form.

However, the application of these topical products are pretty similar.

Here at Strut Health, we offer a prescription combination hair loss formula for women containing Minoxidil (which is the active ingredient in Rogaine), and a men’s Finasteride hair loss formula which also contains Minoxidil. Gels tend to be a little easier to apply than foams and solutions but all hair loss topicals are simple to use.

In this article, we’ll go over how to apply Minoxidil hair loss gel (generic Rogaine) and Finasteride formulas.

Keep scrolling for a how-to and may the hair growth odds be ever in your favor.

How to use Minoxidil gel

Minoxidil (aka Rogaine) is widely used as a topical hair loss treatment. Here at Strut Health, we combine Minoxidil with other prescription-strength ingredients to optimize hair growth and minimize the side effects compared to oral tablets for hair loss.

An important thing to note when using any hair loss topical treatment, you must remain consistent (and patient) in order to see results.

With any over-the-counter or prescription-strength gels, it may take 2 to 4 months to begin seeing results. For the full results, it can take up to 6-12 months. Learn more about Minoxidil for women.

Here is the step-by-step on how to use Minoxidil or Rogaine:

*Please consult your specific product’s directions or doctor’s instructions to avoid any misuse.

  1. Always begin with a clean scalp to avoid skin irritation.
  2. Make sure your hair is dry (but in a pinch, towel-dried is okay too).
  3. Part your hair in a few areas to maximize scalp contact.
  4. Dispense one pump* of the product and apply it to the entire scalp.
  5. Gently massage the product into the scalp (just enough to incorporate it in).
  6. Wash your hands after application.
  7. If the gel got on any other part of the body, wash this as well to avoid any unwanted hair growth.
  8. Wash this product off after 4-8 hours, or sleep in it overnight.

Strut Health advises using the product at night, sleeping with it on, and washing it off in the morning. This allows an absorption time of around 8 hours. At least allow 4 hours.

How to use Finasteride gel

Finasteride is commonly used as a prescription oral hair loss medication.

However, as of 2020, our Strut Health pharmacy team has formulated this powerful prescription into a topical combination gel that may help reduce hair loss and increase hair growth in men.

Our unique custom formula combines prescription and non-prescription ingredients to help maximize your hair loss treatment.  Learn more about why this new topical hair loss treatment is so awesome.

Even with the strength of Finasteride gel -- these things take time. It may take 2 to 4 months to begin seeing results. Remember to stay consistent in order to see results.

Here is the step-by-step on how to use Finasteride gel:

  1. Begin with a clean and dry scalp to avoid skin irritation.
  2. Start with 2 pumps of the gel and see if this is a good amount for your scalp.
  3. Gently massage the gel into your scalp for 30 seconds.
  4. If you use too much, the medication will clump up (just wipe off the excess and use less next time).
  5. Wash your hands after application.
  6. If you accidentally got the product anywhere else on your body, make sure to wash this off as well to avoid unwanted hair growth.
  7. Leave this topical gel on your scalp for at least 4 hours, or sleep with the gel on your scalp.

We recommend that you use this product at night, get some beauty sleep, and wash off the gel in the morning.

To avoid product build-up and skin irritation, make sure to wash your hair daily while using a topical hair loss treatment like Rogaine, Minoxidil, or Finasteride gel.
