How To Use Argan Oil for Hair: What Is It and Potential Benefits

Read on

Everyone wants shiny, healthy, and silky feeling hair, and it makes sense that an oil treatment may help you achieve that look.

But, with all the oils for hair available, how do you know how to choose one over the other? Argan oil is one that seems to always be at the top of the list when it comes to recommendations for hair oils. But, just what is argan oil supposed to do for your hair?

Below, we will cover the basics of argan oil for hair including what argan oil is, the potential hair benefits, exactly how you can use it on your hair, and if it can help you deal with hair loss.

What is argan oil?

Argan oil is an oil that is derived from the seeds, or “kernals”, of the argan tree.

The argan tree is found in Morocco, and in Morocco, it is commonly used as a cooking oil, found in various food items, or as a cosmetic ingredient for hair and skin care.

The seeds must be hand ground to extract the oil, and there are a limited number of seeds per tree, making this oil moderately expensive.

What are the potential benefits of using argan oil on your hair?

The potential benefits of using argan oil in your hair include increased shine, moisture, conditioning, helping to “seal” the strands, heat protection, frizz reduction, UV protection, scalp irritation reduction, and generally enhancing the overall health of your hair.

How to use argan oil for hair?

Depending on what you want to use argan for, you may use this oil on your hair in different ways.

For a dry, irritated scalp, you may want to massage in a small amount of argan oil to help reduce irritation and inflammation.

To help prevent split ends and reduce frizz from damaged strands, you can apply a small amount of argan oil to the dry mids and ends of your hair to help tame frizz and smooth the finished look of your hair.

To help condition and moisturize your hair, you can use a few drops of argan oil mixed into our shampoo or conditioner, apply a moderate amount as a hair mask to wet hair for 30 minutes before washing, or comb a small amount into your hair after washing and conditioning.

In general, argan oil doesn’t leave a very “oily” residue on your hair when used in normal amounts. This is because this oil can soak into the individual strands very well, avoiding a harsh oily feel after application.

With some oils, like essential oils, you want to dilute them with a carrier oil. But with argan oil, you can usually safely use 100% argan oil in this application. However, before using any new beauty product, it is a good idea to do a small patch test on your skin in order to see how your skin reacts first.

Will argan oil help with hair loss?

Argan oil can work well to make your hair look shiny, healthy, and can even moisturize and nourish hair with its lipids, high levels of vitamin E, and polyphenol antioxidant components.

But, it is unlikely that argan oil can help slow or reverse hair loss. Most forms of hair loss are due to male pattern and female pattern hair loss, which are caused by genetic and hormonal reasons. Unfortunately, there is no evidence that argan oil can help put a stop to the root causes of this common form of hair loss.

However, argan oil earns a gold star when it comes to making your hair and scalp look and feel healthier, and may be a good addition to any hair loss or general hair health routine.

The only 2 medications which are FDA-approved for male pattern hair loss treatment are Finasteride and Minoxidil, and the only FDA-approved medication for hair loss in women is Minoxidil. These medications may help address the root causes of patterned hair loss and might slow losses or encourage regrowth in some users.

If you are using treatments with these medications to handle your hair loss situation, you may be able to use argan oil as well to also make the hair look and feel healthier.
