How To Get Rid of Toenail Fungus: 6 Tips To Help Keep Toes Clean and Clear

Read on

Clearing up toenail fungus is, quite literally, a tough one.

One of the biggest obstacles in tackling toenail issues is penetrating through the tough nail to access and clear the underlying fungus.

For this reason, it is recommended to speak with a medical professional and get a medication to help get those nails clear. Even with prescription treatment, toenail fungus can commonly still take a year or more to fully overcome.

However, if you are looking into easy things that can be done to keep that fungus at bay or integrate with your current therapy, check with your doctor about adding on these easy tips to your toenail health regimen.

1. Tea Tree Oil

Limited studies indicate that Tea Tree Oil may have a beneficial effect on nail fungus, helping keep those infected toenails at bay.

More studies need to be done to prove its effectiveness against toenail fungus, but with little to no side effects of applying some to your nails if you can see something starting up, it may be worth a try.

2. Oregano Oil

Oregano oil contains a compound called Thymol that has been found to have antibacterial and antifungal properties.

And, some people swear that this oil helps them keep their toenails clear and looking great.

Oregano Oil is very well tolerated, although some may experience irritation from concentrated oils.

On the upside - Oregano Oil smells great.

3. Baking Soda

If you currently have a toenail fungus or are just prone to getting them, you can try wicking away moisture from those toes.

Dark, damp environments (like your shoes) are the prime environment for fungus to thrive.

Avoid swamp shoe by sprinkling a little baking soda in your socks and shoes daily to help avoid fungus development, or help prevent it from getting worse.

4. Keep Iron Levels Optimal

Toenail fungus often starts from a little break or crack in the nail that then accumulates the fungus.

If you are Iron deficient, your nails may break and chip more easily, putting you at higher risk for a fungus.

Help prevent cracks in the nails in the first place by making sure your Iron levels are optimal.

5. Vicks VapoRub

While it sounds a little strange to put a muscle rub on your toes, some swear by the benefits of applying a small amount of these mentholated ointments to your ailing nails.

These rubs usually contain camphor and eucalyptus which may contribute to their antifungal ways, and a generic formula should function the same as the name brand.

One small study had 18 people with toenail fungus apply a Vicks ointment to the affected nails with a cotton swab for 48 weeks. At the end of the trial, 15 out of 18 participants had a positive treatment effect and all 18 were “satisfied” or “very satisfied” with their nail appearance.

6. Compounded Nail Formula
