Dr. Tara Scott: Hair Loss Locations and Hormones (Video)

(Video Transcript)

Hi there! It’s Dr. Tara Scott, and I’m talking about hair loss.

Now, hair loss, where it is, helps me as a hormone expert to figure out what to tell you.

If you are having hair loss at the temples, we call that male pattern hair loss. And, generally what we see in females is that it could be a high testosterone. And, those are very common times when you are going through puberty, and also when you are going through menopause to have elevated levels of testosterone.

If you are having it here at the top of your head, a lot of the times all over, it can still be due to your androgens.

Sometimes it’s the texture of your hair that changes. It might be that all of the sudden it’s dry, or you are losing peices of it. That could be that your estrogen is high, out of balance from your progesterone.

When things drop post-partum, like I said, it’s whole hairs that come out. But, also, there’s another hormone we don’t think about called cortisol. And that is your stress hormone. And when that is high, we’ve known patients to lose patches specifically from their hormones. And, it could just be one specific place that you’re losing it. And that would be your response to stress.

So it’s really important to know where the hair loss is, and we can check out what the cause of the hair loss is, and that can help us make a recommendation as to how to treat it.

Hormones can play a large role in hair loss, including pattern hair loss which is commonly driven by a hormone called DHT.

If you are concerned about your hair loss and how it relates to your hormone levels, it is important to speak with a doctor and figure out what might be going on.

Here at Strut, we offer hair loss treatment options for the most common forms of hair loss -- male pattern hair loss and female pattern hair loss.

By utilizing DHT-blockers like Finasteride and Dutasteride, hair growth stimulators like Minoxidil, and other active ingredients combined together, we can formulate customized hair loss options for you.
