Slathering some bar soap onto your face in the shower just not cutting it anymore?

Hey, we love simplicity too -- but we think your skin deserves a lot better. If you’re looking for a simple, easy to understand skincare routine for men, we’ve got you covered.

We’ve skipped the unnecessary steps and cut right to the meat and potatoes of a great basic skincare routine for men.

Once you start really taking care of your skin and see the difference it can make, you won’t be going back to that bar soap facial.

No fluff, 4 step skincare routine for men

Let’s keep it simple and go over the 4 most important aspects of a skincare regimen. This routine takes 5 minutes or less.

  1. Cleanser
  2. Serum
  3. Moisturizer
  4. Protection

#1 Wash your face, morning and evening

The first step is to clean the excess oil, dirt, and dead skin cells off your face. Use your facial cleanser for around 30 seconds, lathering up with gentle circular motions and lukewarm water.

No shortcuts here, fellas. Using hand soap, bar soap or body wash on your face is not recommended as it can overly strip your face of its natural oils.

Facial cleansers and body washes use different ingredients for a reason. Do yourself a solid, and pick a good facial cleanser. To pick the best cleanser, you should first identify your skin type:

  • Normal skin is generally clear with no real skin sensitivities.
  • Dry skin is thirsty, maybe rough, and have a dull complexion.
  • Oily skin may have a shiny complexion and visible pores.
  • Combination skin may have some dry areas and some oily areas.
  • Sensitive skin may react negatively after using certain products.

Determining your skin type will help you chose the best cleanser.

  • Dry skin? Opt for a moisturizing cream-based cleanser.
  • Oily skin? Opt for a foaming cleanser with salicylic acid.
  • Sensitive skin? Reach for the cream-based cleanser as it’s less stripping.

#2 Target skin concerns with a serum

Serums are not something you’ve likely used before if you’re new to skincare, but they are instrumental. Serums are concentrations of powerful ingredients that are used to target various skin goals. When applied to the skin, these sink right in and you don’t wash them off. Are you dealing with skin concerns like acne or wrinkles? This is the time to address those issues with daily skin treatments or serums.

Acne-prone: If you get an occasional pimple, having a benzoyl peroxide spot treatment in your medicine cabinet is a good bet. If you deal with regular acne breakouts, using prescription acne serums and treatments can help keep breakouts under control.

Fine lines and wrinkles: Skin showing some signs of aging? Don’t worry you can address that too. Strut Anti-Aging Formula can help mitigate signs of skin aging.

Uneven skin pigmentation: Have areas on the skin that are darker than the rest of your skin? That might be hyperpigmentation which could be a result of sun exposure, acne, or injury. You can brighten these spots up with vitamin C like we have in Strut Brightly Formula.

Dry skin: Using a hyaluronic acid serum before your moisturizer can help boost the moisture in your skin and make dryness a thing of the past.

#3 Moisturize daily

Have you ever snuck a pump of your girlfriend’s moisturizer? Nice, huh? Moisturizing is an essential part of skincare. (Even if you have oily skin you should still be moisturizing.)

Make sure to use facial moisturizer and not body lotion as these can clog your pores or have irritating fragrances. Moisturizers come in lotion or cream form. Using a lotion with SPF in the AM and a heavier cream at night is best practice.

#4 Protect from the sun

A great way to fight against skin damage or skin aging is to protect against the sun’s UV rays. We talk about this a lot on Strut Health because it’s an essential part of a skincare routine.

Use a daily SPF 30 in the AM to protect your skin from the sun. Protecting from the sun is easy, dealing with the repercussions of sun damage isn’t.

You can combine steps 3 and 4 by using a moisturizer that has SPF 30 included.

Article Summary

  • This skincare routine for men includes the absolute essentials of skincare.
  • Order of operations: cleanse, serum, moisturize, protect (in AM)
