What Are Some Wegovy Alternatives?

If you are looking for a Wegovy alternative, you might look to other medications in the same class or compounded options of semaglutide. Learn about Wegovy alternatives here.

Read on

Wegovy is a popular medication for weight management in those who are living with obesity, or who are overweight with weight-related health conditions.

However, it can be difficult to locate this medication due to its popularity, or may not be a good fit for people for other reasons. In these situations, you may be looking for alternatives for Wegovy.

Below, we will outline why some people may be seeking Wegovy alternatives, as well as let you know about other similar medications.

Why you might be looking for a Wegovy alternative

Since Wegovy is currently in a drug shortage, you may be looking for Wegovy alternatives simply because you cannot find Wegovy in stock.

Other people may not be able to tolerate the Wegovy symptoms and want other options. Or, perhaps the injection aspect of Wegovy isn’t appealing to you.

As you can see, there are many reasons why someone may need to find a Wegovy alternative.

While there are many other weight loss medications available on the market, in this article we are going to focus on the medications that are the most similar to Wegovy. Specifically, Wegovy is in a medication class called GLP-1 inhibitors, so we will dive into the differences between these medications.

Other GLP-1 inhibitor medications

Below, we will review a few of the medications that are the most similar to Wegovy and point out a few similarities and differences. However, be aware that some of these may also be on the shortage list or difficult to get in your area at this time. Talk to your doctor if you are trying to find the best Wegovy alternative for you.

Ozempic (Semaglutide)

Ozempic is likely the medication that is the most similar to Wegovy. They both contain Semaglutide as the active ingredient, and they are both once-weekly injectables. However, Ozempic is only FDA-approved for use as a type 2 diabetes treatment, so use as a weight loss aid would be an off-label use. Also, the highest dosages of Wegovy are higher than those available for Ozempic.

Rybelsus (Semaglutide)

Rybelsus is also quite similar to Wegovy, since it also contains the active ingredient Semaglutide. However, Rybelsus is a once-daily capsule that you take by mouth, not as an injection. Also, Rybelsus is only approved for use as a type 2 diabetes treatment, so use as a weight loss agent would be off-label. This oral route may be appealing to some people who do not like injections.

Zepbound (Tirzepatide)

Zepbound is another medication with many similarities to Wegovy. Zepbound is a once-weekly injection, like Wegovy. It is also FDA-approved for use as a weight loss agent like Wegovy. The difference is that Zepbound contains the active ingredient Tirzepatide, not Semaglutide, so it may work in the body a little differently. Semaglutide mimics 1 hormone (GLP-1) to help suppress appetite, while Tirzepatide is thought to mimic two hormones (GLP-1 and GIP) to help reduce appetite. Some studies show this may lead to more weight loss with Tirzepatide medications as compared to Semaglutide.

Mounjaro (Tirzepatide)

Mounjaro is very similar to Zepbound, except Mounjaro is only approved for use in people with diabetes, and not for weight loss. If you are prescribed Mounjaro for weight loss, it is an off-label use. Mounjaro is also a once-weekly injectable medication. As mentioned above for Zepbound, some studies show more weight loss with these Tirzepatide medications than with Semaglutide medications.

Saxenda (Liraglutide)

Saxenda is another GLP-1 inhibitor injectable medication that is approved for use as a weight loss medication. However, this medication is meant to be injected once daily, vs once a week for others like Zepbound or Wegovy. You might be able to find Saxenda for a lower monthly cost than other once-weekly injectables in this same class.

Compounded medications that contain Semaglutide

Another option that some people are turning to, is Semaglutide in compounded medications from a compounding pharmacy. Semaglutide is the active ingredient inside of the medications Wegovy, Ozempic, and Rybelsus. And, while it is not currently available as a generic, some compounding pharmacies are sourcing this raw ingredient to make into injections or oral medications.
